Are Electric Cars Harmful to the Environment?

When electric cars first came out, it seemed like we finally found a new generation of cars that were able to do less harm to the environment than normal cars. While they do reduce reliance on gasoline, the electric cars have plenty of issues that can cause other problems for the environment. One specific problem stems from the fact that electrical energy is often made from natural gas and coal which are unfortunately not renewable resources. Basically, even electric cars run on fossil fuel. Creating the extra electricity required to run these cars will create even more pollution than we already have. Therefore, it appears that electric cars do not eliminate pollution, they just shift it. Electricity also can be made from nuclear energy which has legal and safety issues of its own.

Today’s newer gasoline-powered cars are much more efficient than older ones. In fact, they are releasing only about one percent of the emissions of a car from the 1960s. That is a huge improvement in technology and is probably better for the environment in the long run than electric cars. However, the government is giving people tax credits for purchasing electric cars! Unfortunately, the lawmakers’ information is not keeping up with science.

Would you still choose to drive an electric car after knowing that it does not really reduce pollution?

How would the pollution issue change if more of our electrical power production came from solar and wind power?

What will be the environmental impact of having to eventually discard the large vehicle battery packs that these cars require?

  7. I would still drive a gas car because it's not that much more environmentally harmful than an electric car. I also feel like it would feel weird to drive a silent car.
