Smart homes effect on your carbon footprint by Noah Wasserman

Smart homes effect on your carbon footprint by Noah Wasserman

Electric lighting consumes 19% of total global electricity production. Smart lighting saves up to 50% of energy consumption. Many smart lights detect the motion in the room. The great thing about these lights are that they can be controlled completely by your cell phone. If you are a forgetful person and remember that you did not turn off the lights before you left the house, they don’t have to be left on until your arrival, but instead can be turned off with just a tap of your finger. (Philips Hue lights cost $200)

In the average American home, heating and cooling accounts for half of your energy consumption. Smart thermostats are a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. The smart thermostats purpose is to detect the home's overall temperature and adjust accordingly. This makes sure there is no energy being wasted. Motion sensors work alongside the thermostat, providing information about which areas in the household are being occupied and adjusts whether or not that specific area needs to be heated or cooled.

Smart power strips are a great way to decrease our energy usage. Unlike typical power strips, they detect if a device is no longer in use such as a television. Many people leave their phones to charge overnight. Even though the phone could be fully charged within an hour after plugging it in, it will still receive power for another eight hours or so. Other devices that use power, even if they are in standby mode, include video game consoles and computers.

Lastly, smart windows decrease our carbon footprint as well. The glass within these windows use electrochromic technology to change color when an electric current is applied, giving it the ability to control the amount of light and heat that can pass through into a room. This technology is quite new and is not being used in most homes being built today.

Overall, smart homes are a great advantage not just to the environment, but to us as well. They allow you to get tasks done quicker and worry-free. This technology decreases your energy bill along with your carbon footprint.
