A study consisting of 30,000 students ranging from the ages 10-18 was done to see if the time school starts is linked with weight gain. Statistics show that one in three teens in the U.S. are considered to be overweight or obese, and a lack of sleep doesn’t help those numbers. The study gave evidence to support the claim that students who wake up earlier for school are more overweight than students who go to a school that starts later. 362 schools participated in this experiment, and this study proved that kids who started at 9:30 rather than 8:00 am weighed an average of 3.7 pounds less. Every 10-minute delay in school start time was linked to a slightly lower weight among students who were the same gender, age and height. Although the difference is slight, it still plays a role in teens’ overall weight. Their next step in the study is to use the same students and switch their start times to compare and contrast how much their weight changes. Even though the time school starts is out of a student’s control, it’s something to consider when you’re deciding when to fall asleep at night.

Should schools start later even though it’s only a slight difference in weight gain?

What are ways to help teens fall asleep faster at night?

How does sleep impact a student’s day at school?

    1. Also, if you are tired, then we won't be moving as fast and we also won't have the motivation to stay active leading to weight gain. This is just my opinion by the way.

  6. i feel like this could depend on the person, different peoples body structure need more/ less rest. It does make sense though, people cant use energy and burn extra calories if they dont have enough energy to sleep - caroline

  7. When you are tired, you don't feel as much like being active, and that can cause you to gain weight. Many teens don't get to bed early, so having to wake up early can cause them to be tired all day.-Jeffrey

  8. being tired will lead us to being more lazy after and during school causing us to burn less calories therefore gaining weight

  9. I see plenty of people who fall asleep during class. I also personally don't like getting up early for school. I think it would be good if the school's start times were pushed back to allow students to function better.

  11. No, I don't think school should start later; just go to sleep early and stay off the phone when you're really supposed to be sleep for school.

  12. For me waking up early and dragging myself to school makes it hard to stay up during school. This can be bad for students grades. Jason Williams
