The Greatest Threat to Life On Earth May Come From Space

Next year NASA will launch what will be known as the most impactful space mission to date. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test ( DART ) which is a dart that is designed to smash head on into its target. It’s an attempt to deflect any asteroid as a test for preventing similar space rock to collide with Earth. DART will be the first to demonstrate the kinetic impactor technique which changes the motion of an asteroid in space. The asteroid (65803) called Didymos is the target for the DART demonstration. It's primary body approximately 750 meters across and its secondary body is about 160 meters in size. This is typically size of asteroid that poses a significant threat to Earth, They are keeping a close eye on it using a telescope on earth to precisely measure it properties before sending DART on its way. DART will be launched June of 2021 for an impact on October 2022. DART spacecraft will reach its goal of kinetic impact of deflection by deliberately crash itself to it target at a speed of 6.6 kilometers with the help of an on board camera called (DRACO) and a navigation software. The impact will change the speed of the asteroid and its orbit around the main body by 1 percent, it hopefully will also direct it and its debri into another orbit not hitting Earth.

  1. I agree with the development and launch of DART because, even if the chances of an asteroid hitting Earth are slim, the chance is present and it's important to be prepared.

  2. If DART works, I see no harm in using it to prevent damages to earth. - Grace Briggs

  3. I agree with the launch of DART because it protects the Earth from giant asteroids that can cause great damage.- Riki Tanaka

  4. If it works why not but I think it's alot of money and resources for something that could also come to bite us back -jo

  5. I think the thought of it is good but in reality I don't think it could be as effective as we think because if it does destroy the asteroid it could possibly send even more particles down upon Earth or the calculations could be wrong and would possibly miss its target due to residue in space

  6. I think the development of it would be worth the risk if hypothetically an asteroid comes on a collision course with Earth DART would help ensure we're protected. - Nathaniel H.

  7. I feel that DART should be the only money we spend on keeping asteroids in place or redirecting them away from earth. I believe that we throw away an immense amount of money for precautions that occur once in a blue moon. - Mitchell Shabansky

  8. I wonder if NASA should even be making the DART, for if the mission fails there could be some consequences. One of these consequences could be that the DART does nothing at all and it was a complete waste of money. Another is that it could hit the asteroid but not in the correct position so the asteroid has the possibility of coming even closer. However, if this is a success, it would be a huge accomplishment, and a way to protect our earth. -Tori Favaza

  9. Im sort of neutral because yeah it would be nice to have this asteroid destroyer on our hands, but then again we cant see and predict every asteroid and it cost sooo much money, so im more likely against it -kaylyn sharp

  10. I really don't think its going to happen. In Space objects fly everywhere so why are we worrying about it. Like there are worse things going on in the world, like genocides and etc.

  11. The use of DART I believe is a risky thing to be experimenting with right now. There are other issues going on right now on earth that have a greater risk factor than an asteroid that will most likely never collide with earth. Yes this project can be useful in the future, but right now I think that it is a misuse of resources. We could be using all of the materials and money on other pressing matters.-Haleigh Madi

  12. I agree with the creation of DART, not only for the protection of our planet, but also because it can further our knowledge of science and engineering technologies. -Sawyer

  13. I think that the creation of DART is very important because this is a defense against incoming asteroids. This is the fate or the Earth we are talking about, so I would invest the money into this for the fate of life as we know it. I believe that in the future this device will have a huge impact on Earth and will help protect us. -Andrew

  15. I think the launch of DART is a good idea but what will happen to the debris? -Shannon Easley

  16. I believe this funding may not be of the most practical use.
