Three Earth-Sized Planets Discovered
Sawyer Lownsdale
12 lightyears away, sits a red dwarf star that hosts three Earth-sized planets. At least one of these planets sits in the system’s habitable zone, but it’s possible all three of them could.
Unlike our Sun, GJ 1061 is a red dwarf, meaning it’s much older than the Sun, and it has less stellar activity than our sun. Because of its age and low stellar activity, it has a much cooler surface temperature than most stars, which gives the star it’s red color (our sun’s surface temp. Is 4000 K, compared to GJ 1061’s of 1500-3000 K). While the main candidate for a habitable planet (Planet d) is extremely close to GJ 1061, completing its orbit in only 13 days, because of the star’s low surface temperature, the planet should be able to sustain liquid water.
The main fallback of Planet d, is because of GJ 1061’s age, it’s likely that the constant blast from the star over billions of years, caused Planet d’s atmosphere to diminish and evaporate.

Would you be willing to live or travel to planet D?
ReplyDeleteIf not, what would have to change to make you want to go?
When do you think humans will begin settling other worlds?
I would not be willing to live or travel to planet D mainly because it would currently take trillions of years to reach there. If we could discover and utilize a wormhole I think a lot more people would be willing to make the trip to another planet.
ReplyDeleteI would not be willing to travel to planet D, because it is unrealistically far away.
ReplyDeleteIt is likely that planet D doesn't even have an atmosphere, I wouldn't be willing to live there. We don't know enough about it.
I don't think that humans will be able to live on other planets. - Grace Briggs
I think humans would not settle on other planets for a while because most other planets with a possible habitability are more than 10 light years away and we will have to make a faster way to transport. - Riki Tanaka
ReplyDeleteI personally would go if it didn't take my whole life to get there or take a trip there and not even make.it there alive- jo
ReplyDeleteI would not be willing to go to planet D, the only scenario where I would go is if we have trashed up earth enough to the point of inhabitability, that is the only way I would travel to planet D; if it was the only choice I had. - Mitchell Shabansky
ReplyDeleteIf there was a choice I'd rather not go to planet d because there's a lot that's unknown and Earth feels more like my home then probably any other planet even if I think about doing something like that - Nathaniel H.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if scientists are investigating more and more about other habitable planets because our planet is so polluted because of man. I think that the possibly of having to move to a new planet should be taken more seriously, simply because there will come a time when earth will no longer be what it is today. -Tori Favazza
ReplyDeleteI would not be willing to live or travel there because even though the idea of it is really cool i woild die on the way there, so it really isnt even worth it. -kaylyn sharp
ReplyDeleteI would like to live on planet D but only and only if my family can come with me and they have chocolate on that planet. - Anushka
ReplyDeleteI would not travel to planet D. Humans are already destroying earth and it would not be wise to go and destroy this planet while ours is still habitable. Traveling to this planet would really just be an adventure and something to experience just for fun. I think if you are going spend so much money and have to spend so many hours on training, you should go spend that time and money on other things that are much more significant and important to human life.-Haleigh Madi
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't like to travel to planet D because as of right now we have a perfectly habitable planet that has just about everything I could ever want. I know what's on our planet, but I have no idea what we would find on planet D and we'd also have to pretty much start over from scratch their. It's just not worth it. -Andrew
ReplyDeleteI would not want to travel to planet D because Earth is a very safe planet that will let me survive during my life.-Connor Ortmann
ReplyDeleteI would not be willing to travel to planet D because it is so far away and I would be dead by the time we get there. -Shannon Easley
ReplyDeleteI would go if it didn't take so long to get there or take a trip there and not make it because of how long it will take
ReplyDeleteTaj Mckinney
DeleteI think this research is crucial to a better understanding of our universe.
ReplyDeleteIf it was possible, I'd be willing to travel to Planet D for scientific discovery purposes. -Sawyer L
ReplyDeletei woudlnt make it there alive so no i woudlnt go -brooke phelan
