The Milky Way  by Molly McAuley

The Milky Way has a diameter of 100,000 light years and we are about 25,000 light years away from the center. Our galaxy’s neighbors are The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds orbit the Milky Way which pulls on the galaxy’s hydrogen gas. Our galaxy’s mass is made up of 90% dark matter and about 10% luminous matter. The Milky Way actually has a halo, however it is not able to be seen by the human’s naked eye unlike luminous matter. Our Milky Way weighs as much as 1.5 trillion suns. The heavier the galaxy, the faster the stars orbit. Our galaxy has over 200 billion stars, the biggest being VY Canis Majoris.

What planet would u most want to live on?

Do you believe there are unknown species in space?

Comments

  1. I think it would be almost impossible to believe that earth is the only planet to ever have living species. It is highly possible that many planets used to have living animals. Earth has only had living creatures for a very short amount of time. Compared to other planets, earth is rather young, so the likely hood of finding other planets that have living species would be a rare discovery. -Haleigh Madi

  2. I believe it's impossible that we're the only intelligent life, because if the universe is truly infinite, that must mean there is an infinite amount of life and life-sustaining planets. -Sawyer

  3. I would like to live on Earth because it is perfect for us, we should focus on taking care of Earth. I don't believe in other species in space. I think that humans are the only species with the ability for sentience and next level thinking. So I don't think that stereotypical, humanoid extraterrestrials exist. - Grace Briggs

  4. I think the mikyway galaxy is huge and there could be other signs of life on other planets, and on top of that there are unlimited galaxies with unlimited planets that could have life-

  5. I think the black hole at the center of the milky way interests me the most because it's so fascinating that we have a black hole in the vicinity of our solar system. I would like to stay on Earth because I am unsure as to what we may find on other planets and we already have civilization here so why leave that. -Andrew

    1. I agree, it is very cool. I also want to find out if we can see the black hole clearly if we were on a different planets that is closer to the black hole. Also know more about the ending of milk way what does it contain how does it have a perfectly oval shape. If we keep on looking we will discover a lot of new things. - Anushka Raole
