200 million year old Deep sea Shark captured on film by Raven Barrett

“200 million year old Deep sea Shark captured on film ”
A group of marine researchers from OceanX University, traveled to the depths of the sea only to find what they believe to be is the bluntnose sixgill shark, a species of shark said to be around since before the dinosaurs. Technechally this type of shark was still to be an unknown creature regardless being 200 million years old. The researchers manage to tag the fish from the submarine, while also achieving history. Because tagging a deep sea creature is also extremely hard, and sue to their lifestyle they won't experience daylight.

Why do you think this animal has been undiscovered for so long?

Why/How did it survive through all the years?

Do you think this species might be so rare that there aren’t as many? Or are there more than we think?

Comments

  1. I think that the species is somewhat rare but there are more of them than we think due to not exploring the deep sea.

  2. I think one reason it has survived all these years is its evolutionary "perfection" for its habitat. It is probably perfectly adapted for it's environment and has not had to face any severe threats.

  3. There are many reasons for why this creature remained undiscovered for so long, but it is mostly due to the difficulty we have exploring the deep sea. Light, pressure, and lack of necessity are all factors in why we've explored only a fraction of the sea, and the creatures that reside within it.

  4. I think that this animal has been so hard to discover because we just recently discovered the technology to travel that deep into the ocean. This is because the pressure deep in the ocean in so high.

  5. It was very surprising to learn that the species existed for 200 million years and I was just wondering if they ever found any animal species that existed longer than 200 million years.

  7. I think that there could be a large population due to their obscure location and isolation from humans. Species being endangered are usually caused by human interaction, so the fact that only one has been found could hint that there could be many more. This could also explain how the species has existed for so long.

  8. I believe it survived all these years because it didn't face any drastic biodiversity, which let this particular species of shark not to evolve. Also, since sharks in general are very well made for their environment, very little change occurs over generations since evolution isn't required for the species.

  9. I think the species is still alive after all this time because it lives so deep in the ocean where there is little to no threats to them. I also think there may be more of these animals out in the ocean, we just have yet to discover them. -Maddie Hoffmeyer

  10. I find it surprising that an animal that old is still surviving to this day. I also find it odd though how a shark can survive with not the best diet considering it’s in the emptiness of the deep sea

  11. The deep sea will stay one of the biggest mistery for humans. If we can explore it, we will keep discovering this kind of animals. However, I am surprised how a shark can survive in the deep sea because of his diet. He might go back to the surface for a short lap of time and go back to the deep sea.

  12. I feel like there are a lot more species of aquatic life that we have not discovered or have been lost to time, such as this shark, because of the lack of resources we have to explore the deep ocean

  13. I feel that this shark has been undiscovered for so long because of the amount that are out there along with the similarities of other sharks, But just because we are discovering this shark that had been around so long doesn't mean that there are not other sharks that are undiscovered and even older.

  14. It was very cool learning about sharks. They're very interesting creatures. This one was huge. I think it's wild that they were able to tag it. - Ethan Benoist

  15. I wonder how many other species like this are living deep under the sea where we can't find them? So much of our technology had its origins in the ocean, and it makes me wonder if we'll find some revolutionary 'thing' hidden deep in the water.

  16. I was shocked to see how these people were able to catch this shark after not being able to for 200 years. Especially it being so low to the sea ground seems impossible to tag such creature.

  17. It's cool that there is so much of the ocean that hasn't been explored yet it could lead to so many more deep sea discoveries with new species being found. It could also help with finding out the answers to so many of the questions there are.- aubrey k

  18. That's neat. I guess it hasn't really evolved much as it's so far deep, secluded from everything. I wonder how old it lives to be?!

It is really great to learn that we still have these kinds of species left in the world. they are not harmed because they live really deep into the ocean.
