NASA Discovers a brand new ‘Monster’ Galaxy by Nate Mercier
NASA found a galaxy called UGC 285 a little over 285 million light years away from earth through a picture by the Hubble telescope. The surprising thing about this galaxy thought is its size. This galaxy is over 2.5 times the size of the Milky Way and holds 10 times the amount of stars. According to NASA, there isn’t a clear reason as to how it got to be so big as normally galaxies couldn’t be that big without colliding into something. They are suggesting that this galaxy consumed another galaxy or that the galaxy has been eating the gasses from nearby stars in order to maintain and grow its amount of stars and size. However, there is no proven reason as to how it got to be so big.

What do you think could be some other reasons this galaxy could grow so big
The galaxy in the right corner looks really close, how far do you think it really is
What do you think surrounds the outside of the galaxy
I believe that one way the Galaxy could have grown so large is it could be consuming gasses and other materials. It could also just be extremely old and we just have no way to prove it.

I think this is fascinating how fast we can explore the universe and discover new things. But the more things we discover, the more questions we have.

I think that its interesting in the fact that the galaxy is 2.5 times the size of the Milky Way but is still able to maintain its size and not collide with anything

I feel like this galaxy had gone unnoticed until recently is because it either is very young or it has consumed various gasses or other galaxies

I agree I feel like it’s very young so it was able to expand without collision because the more it’s alive the more likely it is to collide so I think that because it’s young it’s had more luck with collisions and has been able to grow

I feel that the galaxy is growing so big because of the collision with smaller galaxy's near it,
ReplyDeleteand the gases are also adding on to its size.

We talked about if we were worried about collisions with other galaxies, and I'm not worried at all, considering that any collision would occur so far in the future that our sun would be long dead. We'll either be long gone or somewhere else in the universe.

Even though the galaxy in the corner of the picture looks like it would be much smaller than the one in the center, it's very difficult to gauge the size and position of objects in space. It's possible it's just the perspective, and that they are similar in size, but one is closer to us than the other. It's important to remember that space is 3D just like everywhere else, and sometimes only looking at one image can be misleading.

DeleteSince the universe is allways exspanding, it is unlikely that the "monster galaxy" will collide with us soon, because it is so far away.

I think it's interesting how large it is. I think it's interesting that it could've "eaten" gases or could've collided with another galaxy. - Ethan Benoist
ReplyDeleteIt's so wild that there can be something so massive, so unimaginably large, and yet we still can barely get a good picture of even understand what it's doing.

I find it very interesting how there is a galaxy which is bigger than the milky way but can survive and not destroy anything. I am wondering how such a giant galaxy can survive and not destroy the milky way when its 2.5x the size of the milky way

I think that galaxies expand with time so it might be really old and that's why it's so large. It's interesting that there could potentially be galaxies even bigger.

I find it hard to believe that a galaxy can possibly be that big. The milky way feels so big already that its hard to comprehend a galaxy being like that.- aubrey k
ReplyDeleteHearing about the galaxy that consumes gas, remind me of hungry hungry hippos game. Where the galaxy is the hippo and the little balls are gases. On a more serious note, it does alarm me that we cannot control the increasing mass of the galaxy.

DeleteThat's huge. It most definitely would have life if any galaxy did. While I don't think it will crash into us ever, it is definitely worth investigating a bit more :)
ReplyDeleteI think what surrounds the outside of the galaxy is just space, and by that I mean emptiness, like no matter, also gravitational fields that pull the galaxies together.

ReplyDeleteI think that the reason behind this planet is increasing in its size is that it is eating all the gasses from the starts near it. but the scientists are not sure behind this reason. there can also be bigger galaxies than this one.
I found the size of the galaxy very interesting and almost unbelievable because milky way is already huge but galaxy is even bigger. WOW
