Your Zooniverse project notes

Which Zooniverse project did you choose?  Would you recommend it to your classmates to join in or not and why?

Think about these questions:  was it easy to use or confusing?  were the tasks straightforward or difficult?  was it interesting or too boring?

  1. The Zooniverse project I chose was Snapshot Safari, a project dedicated to assessing the populations of animals living on conversations in South Africa. I thought it was interesting and for a good cause, so if anyone had a few minutes to spare, helping out wouldn't be a bad idea. I found the instructions and task to be extremely easy and simplistic. You are shown a series of images and must simply click "yes," if there's a human, animal, or fire, or "no," if there's nothing there. It's very basic, but retains your attention because you get to see pictures of animals, like goats, zebras and deer. Some may find it boring, but I enjoyed it.

  2. The Zooniverse project that I chose was called Criminal Characters which is a project to reveal the untold stories about the lives of prisoners who committed crimes. I would recommend it to my classmates because it's a fascinating project and I thought that it was interesting to learn about the prisoners and what they did to get them landed in a goal. The tasks were easy to use and were pretty straight forward. You are shown someone's record and you fill out the questions asked like color of eyes, height, weight, etc... If the information was missing, you would type in Missing. I found it very interesting but it could be boring to those who aren't very interested in that kind of thing.

  3. The Zooniverse project I chose was Anti-Slavery Manuscripts, where you were tasked with reading and transcribing abolitionist documents (letters, mostly) into easily-read typed English. I would recommend it, but only if you can survive the transcribing. Transcribing is never fun, and it's quite taxing. However, the content of these letters is intriguingly mundane. It's as if you're just hearing two people talk to each other, but these two people are from 150 years ago. I read a letter where a guy just talked about scheduling a political event and told his friend to avoid being to partisan and be politically independent. It was fascinating. It was pretty easy, both to do and understand, but it took a lot of time. I can understand if you get a real dud of a letter than this would be insufferable.

  4. I choose the ¨radio galaxy zoo: LOFAR¨ project. I would not recommend this project to my classmates because it really wasn't that informative and didn't give any results so we really don´t know if the project was effective or not. other then that, learning about the telescope was easy, straight forward, but didn't really catch my attention.

  7. I chose the "Anti-Slavery Manuscripts." I would recommend it to my classmates because its challenging but it also doesn't require any math or anything so its easy logistically speaking. It was very easy to use and straight forward I didn't struggle with the site at all. It was a bit boring I won't lie but it wasn't too bad.

  8. I chose the project "Gravity Spy" and it was a task where you identifies glitches in a graph. I thought it was a little interesting but it gets repetitive as a lot of the graph are very similar. It is a little interesting to first learn about though. It was a very straightforward task and although it wasn't mind-blowing it was engaging enough.

  10. I chose "Snapshot Molopo." I really liked this project and would recommend it to my classmates, or anyone interested in animals. It was very informative, but easy to follow! I love animals, so I thought it was really cool to get to see and identify a large variety of animals, because that isn't something you see every day!

  11. The project I chose was Aurora Zoo, in this project you identify the shape, movement, and if its clear/fuzzy as well as if it's even an aurora. I liked this project because it was easy to follow and interesting to learn about. I would recommend it to my class because you probably wouldn't learn about it that much outside of school. It was cool seeing the many different variations of auroras. -Elena Appel

  12. The zooniverse project I chose is called Supernova hunting. This is a project where one looks at a set of multiple photos throughout time to try to identify the beginnings of a supernova explosion. These identifications are actually really hard, and I wouldn't be surprised if I got some wrong. I don't know if I would recommend it to anybody, they are really hard, but if one is up to it, then you should give it a shot!

  15. The Zooniverse project I chose was "Capturing California's Flowers" and this project was about researching and finding new species of flowers in California and collecting data on it. I would not recommend it to other friends because we don't live in California so it would be impossible. It was pretty easy to understand because the project was pretty straight forward. The tasks were pretty straightforward but it would be very time consuming. I also found it interesting.

  16. Oriana

The project I chose was “Maturity of Baby sounds”. The task was straight forward because the only thing to it was listening to a sound ad decided what sound affect it was. It was also easy but figuring out what sound affect it was was kind of difficult. It was interesting trying to figure out what the sound was. I didn’t really learn much from the project though. The purpose was seeing if different languages and medical conditions affect the sound affect that they made and if it affects how long it takes for them to start talking, but it didn’t say. I wouldn’t recommend it for that reason, but I would recommend it to help the people that run the project so that they CAN get the results.

  17. The project I chose was "Penguin Watching". The task was very easy yet, enjoyable. The website would show you a picture, taken by a motion sensor camera, of a colony of penguins. All you were asked to do was identify the number of adult penguins, baby chicks, eggs and if there were any other species around the colony. I would recommend my classmates joining because it's a very relaxing project but you still get to help researchers study endangered species. This project was easy to understand, fun to do and very straightforward creating a project that everyone can enjoy.
