Illegal Whaling in the Antarctic

A Japanese whaling fleet killed a total of 333 whales on there last campaign to the Southern Ocean between November 2017 and March 2018. Some of these whales are considered endangered and the others will soon join them on that list if these yearly illegal whaling trips down to the Antarctic continue.
Under Article Vll of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (signed in 1996) countries can “kill, take, and treat whales for scientific research. Japan has made many public statements through the years claiming their actions are “scentifactly imperative to understand Antarctica's ecosystem.” However it’s been proven that they are using the whale meat solely for the Japanese Seafood market.
Anti-Whaling Campaigns have been done in the past by an organization known as Sea Shepherd. Back in 2008 they followed the Japanese fleet for their whole whaling season that year and recorded everything exposing them to the world. However unfortunately they have halted in further literal action in the Southern Ocean because they’ve exhausted all there tactics so far to stop the Japanese. They are now more than ever pushing for more government action to be taken to once and for all stop the unnecessary slaughter of innocent whales in the Antarctic.

DeleteI think that the killing of the whales would effect the ecosystem because what ever animal the eats the whales would die because all the whales are getting killed-Brando Mckinley
ReplyDeleteEveryone should care about this issue because endangered species are something worth worrying about. To think that endangered species should just die off is a selfish way to think because their value of life isn't any less than ours. Ashley Herman
ReplyDeleteKilling the whales only aids the killing of the ecosystem. The only thing we can do to stop this is to create better laws and get better enforcement for the laws.

ReplyDeleteI think that kill 300-400 wales could greatly impact the ecosystem be cause if wales don't eat what ever they eat then there would be more of it and that could mess up how things work under water-Jason Williams

DeleteWe need to have laws set for stopping illegal poaching, if the Japanese have been able to stay out of trouble with this there needs to be more serious rules
