A Problem with Plastic in the Water

By Jeffrey Rathert

Pollution has been around for many years, and one type of pollution that has always occurred is water pollution. Most of this pollution is caused by plastic getting into the ocean. It has been estimated that 18 billion pounds of plastic comes into the ocean each year. Another fact is that almost half of all the plastic that is produced is used for packaging, used only once and then thrown away. Recycling only happens to about one fifth of all the plastic that has been made. So far some communities are trying harder to solve this problem by banning certain materials like styrofoam containers and plastic straws.

Is there a good solution to this problem?

What could we do to make a difference in our community?

If this pollution continues, how will this affect us in the future?

  5. Pollution in the ocean is a big problem that would take years to solve. I think we're taking the right steps, but a lot of people don't realize the impact they make when they litter or use plastic bags, so we have to raise awareness.

  7. The trash on the beach could be very harmful to the people who visit the area due to many reasons. All of the pollution in the water and on the sand from all of the plastic and waste could cause infection and sickness in not only people, but animals as well. I don't believe I've ever seen trash in the rivers in St. Louis but I have definitely seen the litter on the sides of the roads. I know that there are probably lots and lots of trash that ends up in rivers from littering and all of the run off carrying the trash into the streams and rivers.
