New Ways to Clean Up Polluted Sources of Drinking Water

By: Ashley Herman

Having clean drinking water is essential to being able to live a healthy life, or even alive at all. Usually we don’t need to worry about having clean water in the United States, there are still places in our country who don’t have this luxury. The most famous case in when unsafe levels of lead were in the water in Flint Michigan. Mostly children were affected by this, and studies showed that this amount of lead can permanently damage a child’s IQ. A study conducted from the year 1982-2015, over 21 million people were served drinking water that failed U.S. standards.

A solution is beginning to be tested is using Ferrate, which is an electrically charged ion that kills bacteria in water. It’s a replacement for many water treatment steps because it breaks down carbon-based pollutants into less harmful chemicals. Most importantly, Ferrate makes ions of the metal manganese less soluble in water, which makes them easier to filter out. It’s also way less costly, and there’s a plan for it to be tested starting in Massachusetts.
