Potential Aquatic-Life on Europa by Alyssa Cearley

Europa, one of Jupiter’s many moons, has long been known as a moon composed of ice. As technology advances and astronomers are able to see more of Europa, they’ve seen that under the layers of ice there’s water and potentially even fire. The water seems to be salty, proving Europa to have active geological processes. Europa appears to have all 3 components of life: soluble water, energy source, and organic compounds. This leads scientists to believe that organisms - either microbes or much larger - could be living on Europa. Back in August NASA announced that a space probe (the Europa Clipper) would investigate this moon by the early 2030’s. A European space organization also released plans for an investigation by 2029. Astronauts are now considering going to Europa and using lasers or an unshielded nuclear reactor to melt the surface and explore the water underneath for potential life.

How would the discovery of alien life change us as a society?

Do you believe there could be aquatic life on Europa? Why or why not?

Would problems occur if humans drilled into Europa’s ice layer?

  1. I find it interesting that the water on Europa is salty. Also I wonder if the core of Europa is hot which would then possibly activate the geological processes otherwise if the core wasnt, how would the geological processes activate?

    1. It would be interesting if the core was actually warm enough, because then it will further prove for there to be aquatic life because of the warmth

    2. It's hard to know details about Europa because of the distance, but scientists theorize that beneath the oceans there is fire. A heated core adds to similarities to Earth further explaining that there could be life on Europa.

  2. I believe that there could be life because the moon is already know to have ice, which is a key component for sustainable life. There is also said to be ice in the water, which is a characteristic that life has or is occurring.

  3. I believe that it is absolutely possible for life to exist there, as there are all the necessary requirements, but I still find it unlikely. It seems much too cold to sustain life and I feel like life would be found further away, not in our solar system. That being said, I would love to be proved wrong.

    1. I agree, as much as I would love to hear about extraterrestrial life so "close," the chances are infinitesimally low. Even after conditions for life are met, the life then must be able to survive in that harsh environment.

  4. I think there could be aquatic life on Europa because if the habitat is good then life could exist

  5. I found very interesting how there might be some life in other planets and the discovery of the water. Although exploration of Europa sounds fantastic I don’t think they should use unsafe nuclear substance especially their objective is to find an organism on the planet.

  6. I don't think the discovery of alien life will affect us really, but it will raise eyebrows because us as humans believe that no other life is happening on other planets but we might be surprised if there is . I have a neutral opinion of other life outside of animal life and human life so I really don't have an opinion

  7. If we could possibly meet aliens that could live on another planet, we could possibly migrate over to their planet and survive.

  8. yes, I think that there can be aqua life on Europa as the article says that Europa has a water surface on it.

  12. The discovery of alien life on other planets may allow for humans to further their understanding of the world. We could study these other species and learn how they thrive in harsh environments and maybe even learn how to recreate their structure to a human advantage.
